The Eagles Nest Wilderness Area Fuels Reduction Project is a unique fuels reduction project in Congressionally Designated Wilderness Area in Colorado. The Summit County Wildfire Council helped bring together residents, two Fire Districts, the US Forest Service, and other county, state and federal officials to create a fuel-reduced break along the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area boundary to give firefighters room to work in the event of wildfire. The treatment was performed by a 13-man crew, all by hand, using hand saws, axes, strength and determination to get the job done. The treated area measures approximately 200' wide and 3 miles long, where the Eagles Nest Wilderness Area is directly contiguous with the Ruby Ranch subdivision. The work was peaceful, without loud chain saws or other mechanical noises. Life in the forest was not disrupted. The end result is a park-like forest boundary, with wildlife returning immediately.
